WELCOME TO THE WOMEN’S CIVIC LEAGUE OF PORTAGE, INC.
PRESERVING OUR HERITAGE ~ FOSTERING COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
Since 1931, women in and around Portage, Wisconsin have met regularly to preserve our heritage from our progressive founder, Zona Gale. Our purpose is to: 1) maintain and preserve the former home and property of Zona Gale in Portage, Wisconsin, 2) provide intellectual and social improvement to members, and 3) provide civic and social involvement to the community through civic welfare and causes. Our membership promotes acceptance, respect and teamwork and is committed to the community of greater Portage, Wisconsin.
Established at a time when it was unusual for women to be progressive, the Women’s Civic League was nurtured through the Depression years, the fifties, and the latter half of the twentieth century. Today it remains an active viable organization in the new millennium! Has it changed over the years? Of course. To remain solid, any group needs to grow with the times and meet new challenges.
Please explore the tabs above to learn about us; our original benefactor, the author Zona Gale; the various renovations and restoration projects that have occurred at the Civic League House and more.
