Maintaining Zona Gale’s historic home is a priority (and obligation) for Women’s Civic League. Many improvements have been required to the house and shoreline.
Shoreline
The restoration of the shoreline began in 2013 and continued with the addition of prairie grasses. Several trees were also removed as well as invasive plants that had taken up residence.
For many years a martin house stood on the back lawn. Harsh Wisconsin winters had left the birdhouse in disrepair. A new birdhouse, built and donated by Bill Damm was to be installed. The large birdhouse will rest on a pole that can be raised or lowered to allow for annual cleaning and maintenance.
Club House Improvements
Improvements to the house included replacing the existing two furnaces and air conditioners with one energy efficient unit. The temperature within the house can now be managed by zone reducing monthly utility bills. Electrical wiring was brought up to code and outside lines buried.
A bathroom was added to the main floor in 2021. It is located under the open stairway, reusing the original paneling and door.

The back porches will be repaired, 2023.
** On August 26, 2015 the American flag was flown over the United States Capital in honor of Zona Gale’ birthday. The flag was returned to Portage and proudly greets visitors to the house.
